The BA (Hons) Urban Landscape Architecture with Integrated Foundation Year explores:  

Sustainability

Encompassing regenerative design, consideration of the environmental, human and ecological impacts of materials and construction, and recognition of the need to design for a changing climate and in ways that mitigate harm and promote care.

Consciously challenging our projects in relation to the social impacts they carry and the positive change they can bring.

Building an understanding of our individual power and responsibility to be a force for good, while taking care of our own community of learners, educators and collaborators. 

Interdisciplinary practice

We believe the future of cities requires designers who have a breadth of understanding across scales and who can interweave a range of ideas and interests in collaboration and co-creation with other disciplines.

Our courses, students and educators share common ground across the spatial and built environment, finding richness in the cross-pollination between their own specialisms.  

During Years 1, 2 and 3 you will specifically focus on:

• Explore and experiment with new kinds of place making
• Town study visits in the UK and abroad
• Cutting-edge parametric and computer-generated design
• Techniques for designing structures and rapid prototyping
• History and theories of architecture, design and cities
• New developments in urban design projects around the world.

You will concentrate on the principles of good practice within studio, context in architecture and design and skills. This will be underpinned by relevant study skill support necessary to provide confident application of ideas and outcomes.

You will also build awareness of other disciplines across Ravensbourne as well as develop a personally directed portfolio of images. This portfolio will address the courses’ aims and provide you with the necessary work to continue on with your degree.

You will be introduced to the different aspects of built environment study, the design process and the underpinning skills and theory. The first two terms of this year of study comprises a largely shared curriculum across BA (Hons) Interior Design Environment Architectures (IDEAs), BA (Hons) Architecture, and BA (Hons) Urban Landscape Architecture.

In the third term a specialist Landscape Unit is offered. We also encourage students to start thinking about their contextual studies research.

• Specialist Study 2: Introduction to Construction
• Specialist Study 3: Introduction to Landscape Architecture
• Architectural Theory and History
• Introduction to Professional and Business Practice.

Year 2 shifts towards interpretation of knowledge gained and the application of the skills acquired in Level 4 in the creative process and explores the subject specialisms in more depth.

All Design Studio units are specialist units for Urban Landscape, while History and Theory units are shared with other courses. We also set briefs that encourage students to collaborate together and create work as part of a design team.

• Design Studio: Site and Ecology
• Design Studio: Urban and Social Ecologies
• Design Studio: Scales of Urbanism
• Urbanism: History and Theory of the City.

Students will bring their learning together in a final major design project, where they will investigate and make urban landscape design decisions.

We also ask students to show their contextual studies research and thinking in a long form dissertation. Students will leave with a portfolio that shows their skills in addressing the opportunities and challenges raised through increasingly dense populations and high competition for resources.

At Ravensbourne we accept a wide range of qualifications for entry onto our courses, whilst also considering the context in which they were achieved. For this course, we would usually require a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English in addition to any of the below;

• Two A Levels at grade CC or above
• BTEC Extended Diploma at grade MPP
• UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma
• T Level (pass or above)
• Access to Higher Education Diploma
• International Baccalaureate at grade 24 or above
• Other/Mixed qualifications equivalent to 64 UCAS Tariff points

There are no interview or portfolio requirements for this course.
