BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Integrated Foundation Year

During your Integrated Foundation Year you will focus on:

• Understanding how graphical computer outputs are generated, interpreted, and utilized in digital systems
• Applying planning, time management, and structured production methods to achieve successful software and hardware outcomes
• Developing responsible and accountable technical workflows in creative computing
• Analyzing complex problems, formulating strategic approaches, implementing solutions, and critically evaluating results
• Experimenting with physical computing, graphical interfaces, and software tools to explore creative and technical possibilities
• Demonstrating and understanding of the historical development, impact, and limitations of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
• Gaining foundational knowledge of programming concepts, including functions, arrays, objects, and event-driven programming.

During Years 2,3 and 4 you will focus on:

• Programming

• Systems Architecture
• Mobile Applications Development
• Databases
• Networking
• Software Engineering for the Web
• Cyber Security
• Cloud Computing
• Design Thinking for Human Computer Interaction
• Artificial Intelligence
• Internet of Things.

In Year 1 of this course, you will be introduced to the fundamental principles of computing and digital problem-solving. Your foundation year gives you the time, space and support to explore your strengths, build confidence and prepare for the demands of project-based, industry-focused learning. Modules are as follows:

• Module 1: Diagnostic exploration - making informed choices
• Module 2: Technical - Technical knowledge in practice
• Module 3: Specialist - Innovating specialist practice
• Module 4: Integration - Integrated practice for progression to Higher Education

In Year 2 you will develop the fundamentals, concepts, principles, and theories of computer science.  

You will  learn to programme in a range of languages to solve common computer science problems. You will gain an understanding of different data and information types and appropriate processing and management techniques. Demonstrate basic creative problem-solving skills as applied through Computer Science. Understand issues relating to legal, ethical and health and safety-based concerns. Locate Computer Science within a wider social and professional context. Demonstrate an understanding of the link between theory and practice.

• Computer Networks and Technology
• Professional Life Practice - Developing your Practice
• Web Design and Databases
• Immersive Technologies
• Professional Life Practice - Exploring your Practice.

During Year 3, you will demonstrate a critical understanding and knowledge of principles and techniques of computer science.

You will be able to analyse, design, develop and evaluate a range of projects that utilise core concepts of computer science. You will also apply these principles to create a range of software and/or hardware entities.

The course will help you to demonstrate a knowledge of how computer science fits within a broader social, political and/or professional context. You may work independently as well as work effectively as part of a team on various projects.

Modules may include:

• Operating Systems and Cloud
• Computer Vision and AI
• Full Stack application Development
• Professional Life Practice - Applying your Practice
• Work-Based Learning.

By Year 4, you will be able to demonstrate a detailed subject knowledge and professional competence in analysis, design and development of appropriate computational solutions.

You will apply your high level project management skills, technical knowledge and creative techniques to the production of a final Computer Science project & report.

Modules may include:

• Advanced Computer Vision and 3D
• Professional Life Practice - Situating your Practice
• Final Project
• Ethics, Risk and Project Management.

At Ravensbourne we accept a wide range of qualifications for entry onto our courses, whilst also considering the context in which they were achieved. For this course, we would usually require a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and Maths in addition to any of the below:

• Two A Levels at grade CC or above
• BTEC Extended Diploma at grade MPP
• Other/Mixed qualifications equivalent to 64 UCAS Tariff points

There are no interview or portfolio requirements for this course.
