Urban Landscape Architecture

Key study themes for this course are:

• Explore and experiment with new kinds of place making
• Town study visits in the UK and abroad
• Cutting-edge parametric and computer-generated design
• Techniques for designing structures and rapid prototyping
• History and theories of architecture, design and cities
• New developments in urban design projects around the world.

In Year 1 students will be introduced to the different aspects of built environment study, the design process and the underpinning skills and theory.

The first two terms of this year of study comprises a largely shared curriculum across BA (Hons) Interior Design Environment Architectures (IDEAs), BA (Hons) Architecture, and BA (Hons) Urban Landscape Architecture.

In the third term a specialist Landscape Unit is offered. We also encourage students to start thinking about their contextual studies research.

• Specialist Study 3: Introduction to Landscape Architecture
• Architectural Theory and History
• Introduction to Professional and Business Practice.

The second year of the course shifts towards interpretation of knowledge gained and the application of the skills acquired in Level 4 in the creative process and explores the subject specialisms in more depth.

All Design Studio units are specialist units for Urban Landscape, while History and Theory units are shared with other courses. We also set briefs that encourage students to collaborate together and create work as part of a design team.

• Design Studio: Urban and Social Ecologies
• Design Studio: Scales of Urbanism
• Urbanism: History and Theory of the City.

Students will culminate their learning in a final major design project, where they’ll make key urban landscape design decisions.

They’ll also produce a long-form dissertation showcasing their research and critical thinking. By the end of the course, students will graduate with a portfolio that demonstrates their ability to address challenges such as dense populations and resource competition.

At Ravensbourne we accept a wide range of qualifications for entry onto our courses, whilst also considering the context in which they were achieved. For this course, we would usually require a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English in addition to any of the below;

• Two A Levels at grade CC or above
• BTEC Extended Diploma at grade MPP
• UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma
• T Level (pass or above)
• Access to Higher Education Diploma
• International Baccalaureate at grade 24 or above
• Other/Mixed qualifications equivalent to 96 UCAS Tariff points
