If you are studying the BA (Hons) UX UI User-Experience and User-Interface Design with Integrated Foundation Year version of this course, key topics of your integrated foundation year will include:

• Fundamental 3D Design Principles: ergonomics, materials, scale, size, form, and function
• Essential UX principles: user-centred design, information architecture, hierarchy, visual flow, and accessibility
• Proficiency in software and applications for prototyping and extended reality (XR) experiences (Photoshop, Rhino, Blender, Figma, SketchUp, Unity)
• Applying visual language, form principles, and 3D thinking to communicate meaning
• Techniques for shaping, visualising, and communicating 3D forms while balancing hybrid experiences
• Understanding technical workshop operations and using specialist immersive Design facilities
• Employing creative strategies to generate, test, and evaluate design concepts

If you choose to add an Integrated Foundation Year on this course, you will be first introduced to the fundamental principles of design. Your foundation year gives you the time, space and support to explore your strengths, build confidence and prepare for the demands of project-based, industry-focused learning. Modules are as follows*:

• Module 1: Diagnostic exploration - making informed choices
• Module 2: Technical - Technical knowledge in practice
• Module 3: Specialist - Innovating specialist practice
• Module 4: Integration - Integrated practice for progression to Higher Education

This design-led introduction explores core competencies in graphic and information design and in design and coding for the web.

Students will begin to learn the fundamental skills of the UX and UI designer in the structuring of visual information and start to develop a fundamental digital skill-set. A programme of industry practitioners and speakers supplements and enhances the core delivery.

Year 2 explores more advanced interactivity through play and experimentation in coding. Encouraging a personal approach, the course enables and supports the application of both individual and group design propositions to real-world and imagined scenarios.

• Professional Life Practice: Applying your Practice
• Work-based learning

The culmination of three years of study is channelled into practical projects, which become increasingly professional in scope.

A range of self-directed projects along with a major project of the final body of work forms the third year of study. Final work is appropriate to applied contexts within the creative industries.

We accept a wide range of qualifications for entry onto our courses, whilst also considering the context in which they were achieved. For this course, we would usually require a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English in addition to any of the below;

• Two A Levels at grade CC or above
• BTEC Extended Diploma at grade MPP
• UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma
• T Level (pass or above)
• Access to Higher Education Diploma
• International Baccalaureate at grade 24 or above
• Other/Mixed qualifications equivalent to 64 UCAS Tariff points

Selection criteria:

We will consider a wide range of applicants who show creativity and curiosity in the areas of design, technology, research, and more specifically digital experiences and interfaces. You do not need to have any coding or specific design software knowledge to be considered for the course. Admission onto this course is also subject to successful completion of a portfolio (or showreel). 

We may also consider a combination of portfolio and academic qualifications and take into consideration progress made during studies and/or relevant work experience.

If you wish to study our BA (Hons) UX UI User-Experience and User-Interface Design course, we will need to see examples of previous work that showcases your suitability for the course. 

Your portfolio may include:

• App and website design
• Posters/books/other print based projects
• Experiments with code and programming
• Working with materials and technology
• Games design projects
• Photography, video, animation, media projects
• Fine arts projects
• Relevant academic work in social science subjects

It is also great to see your creative process and how you developed your final outcome. Please include sketchbooks including brainstorms, sketches or drawings of ideas and designs, inspiration, moodboards, experiments and prototypes. You may also want to include extra projects and self-initiated design or technology projects you have done outside of any education program.
