Bursaries and scholarships

The 16 to 19 bursary fund provides financial support to help students stay in pre-degree studies. This funding is provided by the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and therefore, strict eligibility criteria apply.

There are two types of 16 to 19 bursaries available:

• bursaries for defined vulnerable groups of up to £1,200 a year
• discretionary bursaries to meet individual needs, for help with the cost of transport, meals and course equipment.

Termly discretionary cash payments will be available to those with the most challenging financial circumstances. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for the discretionary bursary, you must:

• be an enrolled student on a full time pre-degree course at Ravensbourne starting in September 2025
• have 'home' student status or have been granted full 'refugee' or 'asylum seeker' status
• have been 'ordinary resident' in the UK, EU or EEA continuously for the last three years with 'settled status' which means having indefinite leave to remain
• maintain at least 90% attendance
• have a household income of £35,000 or less per year
• be aged 16 or over but under 19 at 31 August 2025 or
• be aged 19 or over with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or
• be aged 19 or over and continuing on a study programme which began when aged 16-18.

To be eligible for the vulnerable bursary, students must meet the above criteria and be:

• in care
• a care leaver
• receiving income support, or universal credit because they are financially supporting themselves or financially supporting themselves and someone who is dependent on them and living with them such as a child or partner
• receiving Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payments in their own right as well as Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit in their own right.

How to apply

Students should complete the online application form and provide the Student Services Team with supporting evidence as follows:

For the vulnerable bursary:

• For students in care or a care leaver; written confirmation of your current or previous looked-after status from the relevant local authority - this is the local authority that looks after you or provides your leaving care services. The evidence could be a letter or an email but must clearly from the local authority
• For students in receipt of Income Support or Universal Credit, a copy of their Income Support or Universal Credit award notice. This must clearly state that the claim is in the student's name/confirm they are entitled to the benefits in their own right. The evidence must not state any conditions that prevent them from participating in pre-degree studies or training. For students in receipt of Universal Credit, institutions must also see a tenancy agreement in the student's name, a child benefit receipt, children's birth certificates, utility bills etc.
• For students receiving UC/ESA and Disability Living Allowance and Personal Independence Payments, a copy of their UC claim from DWP (UC claimants should be able to print off details of their award from their online account). Evidence of receipt of Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment, must also be provided
• A completed student budget planner
• Copies of your bank statements for the past 3 months

Please be advised that students who meet the criteria for bursaries for vulnerable groups are not automatically entitled to a bursary if they do not have financial needs and/or their financial needs are covered from other sources.

For the discretionary bursary:

One of the following as proof of household income:

• a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions showing receipt of benefits
• a P60 from the current tax year
• a Tax Credit Award Notice
• copies of last 3 online statements for Universal Credit (last 3 months).

Students should also supply:

• a completed student budget planner
• copies of personal bank statements for the past 3 months.

Students in receipt of an Advanced Learner Loan from Student Finance England, may be eligible for support from the advanced learner loan bursary fund. The money can help pay for things like:

• travel
• course materials and equipment
• childcare.

This funding is provided by the ESFA and therefore, strict eligibility criteria apply.

Eligibility

Students must be in receipt of an advanced learner loan and have a household income of £35,000 or less.

How to apply

Students can apply for an advanced learner loan bursary by completing the on-line application form and provide the student services team with:

• A copy of your advanced learner loan statement
• Personal bank statements for the past 3 months
• A completed student budget planner (available online or from the student services team).

And one of the following as proof of your family's household income:

• a letter from the department of work and pensions showing receipt of benefits
• a P60 from the last tax year
• a tax credit award notice
• copies of online statements for universal credit (last 3 months).

Students applying for childcare support should download the childcare provider form which needs to be completed by the childcare provider.

With regards to Access to HE course specifically, Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balances you owe once you complete a BA course.

The higher education course must be eligible for student finance.

If you made extra repayments towards your Advanced Learner Loan before starting a Higher Education course, these repayments are non-refundable.

Free meals are targeted at the most disadvantaged students, meaning those in receipt of, or having parents who are in receipt of, one or more of the following benefits:

• Income support
• Income-based jobseekers allowance
• Income-related employment and support allowance (ESA)
• Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• The guarantee element of state pension credit
• Child Tax Credit (provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190) as assessed by HMRC
• Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for four weeks after someone stops qualifying for working tax credit
• Universal Credit with net earnings not exceeding the equivalent of £7,400 pa.

How to apply

You do not need to apply separately for free meals, as we will assess you when we receive your application for the 16-19 bursary based on the household income evidence provided.

This funding is provided by the ESFA.

Ravensbourne is committed to providing assistance to our students in financial hardship. The student services support award is given to students who face an unexpected crisis that may jeopardise their ability to continue with study.

This bursary is usually awarded as a payment in kind towards the costs of food, travel and/or course equipment. Depending on circumstances, a cash payment may be given.

Eligibility

• All foundation and access to HE students who can demonstrate financial hardship.

How to apply

Students will need to complete the online application form and provide copies of the following evidence to support your application:

• Your tenancy agreement (if applicable)
• Bank statements for past 3 months
• A completed student budget planner
• Evidence of any benefits received.

Family Action

Family Action has been distributing grants to help people and families in need since they were founded in 1869.  They know that by giving a small grant when it’s needed the most, they can remove immediate financial barriers, thereby helping families to work through the bigger issues they’re facing.

Eligibility:

The Ravensbourne Aspire scheme is available to students, who

• are joining Ravensbourne to study an undergraduate degree course in 2026/27 academic year.
• are paying home tuition fees of £9,535
• have an approved means assessed maintenance loan from the Student Loans Company
• have a declared household income of £35,000 or less

How to apply

Students will not have to apply for the scheme, they will be emailed with details of how to activate their account within 4 weeks of confirmation of registration on course.  If students already own an appropriate laptop, they can apply the Aspire scheme credit to other course equipment on the online shop such as tablets and digital equipment or design materials.

Students or parents will be able to top up the funds on the card during the year.

This bursary provides financial support to students entering higher education direct from Local Authority Care. It is a lump sum payment of £1000 payable at the start of February following confirmation of attendance in Semester 2. 

Eligibility

Students must:

• be paying home tuition fees of £9,535
• have approved care leaver/experienced status from the Student Loans Company
• have accessed the maximum support available to them from the Student Loans Company.
• be studying an undergraduate degree course in 2026/27 academic year.

How to apply

Students should advise Student Finance England when applying for tuition fee and maintenance loans that they are care experienced. They will be required to provide a confirmation of care experience letter from their local authority for care leaver status to be approved. Students with SFE Care Leaver status will automatically be eligible for this £1000 award. 

If you are a young carer, there is likely to be a significant impact on your wellbeing as a result of your caring role. Ravensbourne are able to offer you some additional financial support. 

Eligibility 

Students must:

• be paying home tuition fees of £9,535
• have accessed the maximum support available to them from the Student Loans Company
• be studying an undergraduate degree course in 2026/27 academic year

And provide evidence of one of the following categories:

• Working with a recognised Young Carers Organisation in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, or
• Previously in receipt of Carer’s Benefits, or
• Notification letter from family GP or Social Worker.

How to apply

Students should contact Student Services providing evidence listed above. Eligible students will receive £1000 payable at the start of February upon confirmation of attendance in Semester 2. 

Applications will need to be made for each year of study. 

Ravensbourne will reimburse students in receipt of DSA equipment allocation, the £200 upfront fee they are required to pay to access their support.

Eligibility:

Students in receipt of DSA equipment allocation.

How to apply

Once DSA is confirmed, students should complete the online application form* and supply a copy of the receipt of payment.

Ravensbourne has additional financial support available for our estranged/independent students in the form of a lump sum payment of £1000, payable at the start of February following confirmation of attendance in Semester 2. 

Eligibility

Students must:

• be paying home tuition fees of £9,535
• have accessed the maximum support available to them from the Student Loans Company.
• be studying an undergraduate degree course in 2026/27 academic year.
• Have approved 'irreconcilably estranged' status or 'under 25 and self funding' status from the Student Loans Company.

How to apply

Students should apply for Estranged/Independent status when applying for their tuition fee and maintenance loans from Student Finance England (SFE). 

For 'estranged' status - you will be asked to provide third party supporting evidence. If you require assistance with your application, please contact [email protected]

For 'under 25 and self funding' status - you will be required to provide financial evidence to demonstrate your independence for the period of 3 years prior to the first day of your course. For September 26/27 intake; 1-9-2023 to 1-9-2026. If you require assistance with your application, please contact [email protected]

Students with approved SFE 'irreconcilably estranged' or 'under 25 and self-funding' status will automatically be eligible for this £1000 award. 

For 25/26 Graduates, you may be eligible to apply for the Ravensbourne Graduation Bursary. This award will help with the cost of your tickets, gown hire and photographs to record the day. In some circumstances, funding towards travel expenses is also awarded.

Eligibility

Student must:

• have paid home tuition fees of £9535 in 25/26 academic year
• have accessed the maximum maintenance loan support available to them from the Student Loans Company in 2025/26 academic year
• have graduated from an undergraduate degree course in 2025/26 academic year
• have been invited to attend a Graduation Ceremony in 26/27
• have a household income is £25,000 or less,

It is often difficult for care leavers and estranged students to find someone who is willing to act as a guarantor when booking accommodation. It is an equal challenge to provide a co-signer when booking with a guarantor provider like Housing Hand and to find the fee for the service.

As part of our pledge to support our care leavers and estranged students, we are working in affiliation with Housing Hand to offer a free, no co-signer required, guarantor service to qualifying students.

The internal progression award is a one-off award of £500 paid at the start of February of the student's first year on their undergraduate course.

Eligibility

This award is available to all new undergraduate students who have progressed directly from a Foundation Diploma or Access to HE Course at Ravensbourne in the previous academic year.

How to apply

Qualifying students are not required to apply for this award. Payment will automatically be arranged following confirmation of attendance in Semester 2 at the start of February in the first year of an undergraduate course.

Students with a household income of up to £35,000, will receive an automatic cash award of £500 per academic year of study.

Eligibility

The Ravensbourne bursary is available to home/UK undergraduate students, who:

• are studying at level 3, 4, 5 or 6 on a undergraduate degree course in 2026/27 academic year.
• are paying home tuition fees of £9,535.
• have an approved means assessed maintenance loan from the Student Loans Company.
• have a household income of £25,000 or
• have a household income of £35,000 or less, as declared to SFE and meet one of the following criteria:
• a care-leaver
• irreconcilably estranged from family
• a mature student
• disabled
• BAME background
• a carer
• have a parent in the Armed Forces
• live in a low University participation area.

How to apply

Students do not need to apply as they will automatically be assessed for eligibility against our criteria when they apply for Student Finance with the Student Loans Company. 

When will it be paid?

Year 0, 1 & 2 (level 3, 4 & 5) students will receive £500 on or around 5 February 2027 following successful progression to Semester 2.

Year 3 (level 6) students will receive £500 cash on 27 November 2026 following confirmation of attendance on course. 

Please note:

• The Ravensbourne bursary is only paid once per course level. Students repeating a year will not be eligible to receive the award again.
• Recipients of The Ravensbourne bursary are also able to apply for other sources of bursary funding.
• Attendance and engagement on course may be taken into consideration.

The Amazon Future Engineer bursary is a national bursary programme aimed at supporting women A-level and BTEC/OCR (or Scottish equivalent) students from low-income households who wish to study computer science or related engineering courses at UK universities.

Accelerating the careers of women in Engineering

Women are still significantly underrepresented in engineering and technology in higher education. UCAS data on university application and acceptance figures for the 2020 cycle1 highlighted that women represent just 16% and 18% of accepted applications to computing and engineering degrees respectively. At the current rate of progress, parity of women on engineering degrees will not be achieved until 2085. We cannot wait that long.

Awardee benefits

These bursaries aim to help address underrepresentation and accelerate the rate of progress. They will provide successful women applicants with a financial support package worth £5,000 per year for up to four years of study to cover expenses related to attending university, including tuition fees or accommodation and living costs. 

By removing some of the financial barriers that may impact on university studies and career trajectory, recipients can remain committed to their courses and stand the best possible chance of success.

Awardees will also gain exclusive access to networking groups to meet positive role models, interact with like-minded peers, build long-term relationships, and benefit from collaboration opportunities.

The LNS has been set up to directly tackle the architecture profession’s lack of diversity by awarding architecture scholarships to disadvantaged young people from London’s neighbourhoods. 

The Trust offers a £10,000 per year for students studying an undergraduate degree in architecture to cover material costs and living expenses.

The Save the Student Bursary is aimed at helping prospective students from low-income and disadvantaged backgrounds access the essential items they need to begin their university journey.

Save the Student awards £750 to six new students – a total of £4,500, jointly funded by their partners at JS Group. 

The funding is administered via the JS Group's award-winning Aspire Cash service, ensuring a quick, easy and secure delivery of the funds. Students will be able to use the bursary to purchase laptops, bedding, kitchenware, and other university essentials.

Students must be:

• UK domiciled
• Starting an undergraduate degree course in the coming academic year
• Paying home fees of £9350
• Have a household income of £40,000 or less
• Have an open UK bank account

The Helen Lansdown Resor Scholarship offers a $10,000 scholarship towards your education for five creative women each year.

The scholarship is open to any woman studying in a creative field with an interest in advertising and a least 12 months remaining in their course. 

In addition to the financial offering the scholarship programme includes an internship with J. Walter Thompson, one-to-one mentoring and first-look at a placement after graduation. 

Applicants will need to submit their application form, personal statement, letter of recommendation and 3 - 5 creative samples.

The BFC MA scholarship is awarded to a graduate from one of the BFC Colleges. The funding, which is from the British Fashion Council Education Foundation, is given to support graduates who have been offered a place on a UK MA fashion design course, and who, for financial reasons, would be unable to accept their place on the course without support.

A Postgraduate Master’s Loan can help with course fees and living costs while you study a postgraduate master’s course.

You can get up to:

• £12,471 if your course starts on or after 1 August 2024
• £12,167 if your course started between 1 August 2023 and 31 July 2024
• £11,836 if your course started between 1 August 2022 and 31 July 2023
• £11,570 if your course started between 1 August 2021 and 31 July 2022

The amount you’ll get is not based on your income or your family’s income.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) may take account of the loan when working out any benefits you receive.

The loan is paid directly to you. You can use it for your course fees and living costs.

If your course lasts for more than a year, the loan will be divided equally across each year of your course.

This bursary is available to international students who face an unexpected financial crisis that may jeopardise their ability to continue with study.

Small discretionary payments to offer interim support could be offered to eligible students. In some cases, the funding will be offered in the form of food vouchers.

Eligibility

Students should:

• be studying an undergraduate degree course at Ravensbourne in 26/27 and
• paying international tuition fees
• be up to date with tuition fee payments
• have maintained attendance in line with university attendance policy

Please be advised that there is no financial support available towards tuition fees and funding cannot be offered to students with tuition fees outstanding.

Ravensbourne is partnered with International Students House (ISH) to give our international students access to financial support from the Mary Trevelyn Hardship Fund. 

Eligibility

Students must meet all of the following criteria to apply for the Mary Trevelyan Hardship Fund:

• Studying full-time at Ravensbourne University London
• Be studying on an International Student Visa
• International tuition fees must be paid up to date
• In financial need due to unexpected circumstances

A Postgraduate Master’s Loan can help with course fees and living costs while you study a postgraduate master’s course.

You can get up to:

• £12,471 if your course starts on or after 1 August 2024
• £12,167 if your course started between 1 August 2023 and 31 July 2024
• £11,836 if your course started between 1 August 2022 and 31 July 2023
• £11,570 if your course started between 1 August 2021 and 31 July 2022

The amount you’ll get is not based on your income or your family’s.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) may take account of the loan when working out any benefits you receive.

The loan is paid directly to you. You can use it for your course fees and living costs.

If your course lasts for more than a year, the loan will be divided equally across each year of your course.

If you are starting a postgraduate course in the coming academic year you may be eligible to apply for a Postgrad Solutions Study Bursary. 

Each bursary is worth £2000 and they are open to students from anywhere in the world. See their website for eligibility and terms and conditions as this bursary scheme is external to Ravensbourne - Postgrad Solutions Study Bursaries.
