Ravensbourne University London Film and Media students enjoyed an extraordinary opportunity this week as they met King Charles during his visit to Eastbrook Studios, one of London’s fastest-growing film and TV production hubs.

The visit formed part of a wider tour of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, with the King meeting local leaders in Barking town centre before visiting Barking & Dagenham College and concluding the day at Eastbrook Studios in Dagenham East.

Industry experience at the heart of learning

Twenty students in total – including six from Ravensbourne – took part in the 30-minute visit, which celebrated the growing partnership between education and the film and television industries. The students have been working with Eastbrook Studios for the past year on various projects and were invited back after previously producing a film on site.

During the visit, the students shadowed a live production, providing behind-the-scenes insight into how a professional studio operates and how large-scale film and TV projects are brought to life.

Meeting the King gave students the chance to talk about their creative work, their career ambitions, and how real-world industry experience is helping to shape their futures.

Investing in the future of film

Eastbrook Studios is part of a wave of major investment across London that is transforming the capital into a global centre for film and television production. These new studios – a short tube ride away from Ravensbourne’s campus - are not only bringing jobs and economic growth to the area but are also opening up pathways for young people from diverse backgrounds to break into an industry that has historically been challenging to enter.

By working directly with students, studios like Eastbrook are helping to future-proof the film and TV sector, ensuring it has the skilled, creative and diverse workforce it needs to thrive.

Ravensbourne’s involvement in the project reflects our commitment to giving students hands-on experience with leading industry partners, preparing them for successful careers in the fast-moving creative industries.

A memorable moment

For the students involved, the visit was both a proud moment that they will remember forever, and a powerful reminder of the opportunities now emerging in east London’s creative economy.

A special thank you to Film Barking and Dagenham, everyone who helped to develop the SET IN MOTION project, and the Make It Here programme. Without you all, this would not have been made possible.
