MDes Design Management Innovation

In the corporate world, design managers oversee the development of products and services and manage the innovation process workflow. They also have a significant strategic role in managing the articulation of a business strategy, continuously improving the customer experience.

Our MDes Design Management programme will allow you to think creatively about organisational and business problems and use design thinking to offer innovative solutions.

The course provides students with the knowledge and skills to manage design holistically and strategically, and equip the postgraduates with the necessary skills and knowledge to progress to senior positions as well as to expand this influence to the wider community.

What you
need to know

Entry requirements

First or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent non-UK qualifications) in a relevant subject, or an equivalent professional qualification in a related subject area.

If you are applying directly from an undergraduate degree course without experience or professional practice you must be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of your chosen subject area.

In order to be eligible for a course, you will need to be a competent speaker and writer of English. This also applies if you are from the European Union, or if you're from a country outside the EU. You need to provide us with an IELTS or equivalent English language qualification demonstrating a minimum of 5.5 or CEFR Level B2 in each component.

Selection criteria

We welcome applicants who are able to demonstrate their abilities through prior academic qualifications and/or previous employment. 

To get a holistic view of your ability and aptitude to succeed on the course we will also consider your enthusiasm and interest in the subject area, how you manage the creative process, and your study and professional skills.

Course structure

Stage one

This stage introduces you to a range of theories and practices in the strategic use of design and innovation, with a particular focus on the method of design thinking in the global context and how it relates to design management.

Unit 3 Managing Design in a Global Society and Economy


Stage two

This stage develops the practical application of design thinking with a focus on innovation and industry-oriented professional practice based on design management. It also extends your innovation and leadership toolkit.

Unit 4 Professional Practice in Management and Consulting

Unit 5 Strategic Design and Innovation

Unit 6 Studio Practice


Stage three

This stage allows you to evaluate and advance existing knowledge ahead of your Major Project.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching and learning methods on the programme vary throughout the units providing diversity and offering you the opportunity to experience real or simulated industry practice. They range from traditional delivery of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshop, to newer modes of learning via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and other e-learning methods, and via industry visits and work placements.

You are also encouraged to engage in self-directed learning and to plan your individual learning journey and also to take advantage of peer-to-peer learning.
