Ravensbourne students are amongst the first to collaborate with Outernet and will deliver their final pitches in November, after which the Outernet creative team will shortlist the best proposals. The chosen work will be displayed digitally on the screens and physically in the spaces across the Outernet district. Motion graphics, animation and film will be fused with physical objects and printed materials to bring the students’ concepts to life. Ravensbourne joins impressive Outernet partners that already include legendary film director Ridley Scott and the world’s leading men’s lifestyle brand, GQ.

Outernet London will launch in October 2021, beginning a global roll out with further sites planned in LA, New York, Europe and Asia. Driven by 23,000 sq. ft of floor to ceiling 8K screens, brands will be able to tap into the value of the immersive media environment on a scale never seen before. Outernet London is projected to become one of London’s most visited attractions, with a potential footfall of over 100 million people per year.

The students have been asked to create a visual story that celebrates how Denmark Street’s iconic past is shaping its future. Denmark Street, known as ‘London’s Tin Pan Alley’, was the hallowed ground of the rock’n’roll boom in the 1960’s. The street housed recording studios used by The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and Elton John. David Bowie hung out and plotted his creative rise and the Sex Pistols rehearsed and lived at number 6. The cultural and musical heritage of Denmark Street is central to the Outernet project; a 2000 capacity venue is due to open as well as the relaunch of the iconic former 12 Bar Club.

Student Sam Hamilton explains that, “The opportunity to work for a company that is making genuine change and giving us complete creative freedom is a dream! The Advertising and Brand Design team have been amazing to organise this; I never even considered this project to be a possibility when joining the course.”

Course leader Derek Yates commented on the collaboration, “This is such a fantastic learning experience for our students. To be able to showcase their work in such a unique and ground-breaking venue is a once in a lifetime opportunity. In addition to this, they will also have the chance to pitch to and get feedback from some of the best people working in this industry. I really am blown away!

Outernet CEO Philip O’Ferrall said “We are passionate about helping shape the creative future talent. We are very proud to be able to provide the students with one of the most amazing opportunities and the best canvas that has ever been created anywhere in the world, and together we will make some amazing things happen.

It’s a real honour for our students to be involved in such a seismic project. Our students will get to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Denmark Street while using the very latest technology. We look forward to seeing their work on display!
