Lead architectural innovation

The MArch Architecture course is designed to equip emerging architects with the advanced skills required to navigate and shape complex, contemporary practice utilising leadership skills and emerging technologies. It merges rigorous design exploration and resolution, critical research, and professional principles, to prepare graduates to address the most pressing social, environmental, and technological challenges facing the built environment.

Students will engage with a rich and varied curriculum spanning design, environmental performance, technology, research methods, leadership, and ethical and sustainable practice. Practical application of design skills is central to this course with studio‑based projects, industry live briefs and case studies shaping the curriculum. The agendas explored across modules reflect current and nascent priorities within the built environment and a global discourse. This architectural design course is delivered with at least 50% of modules focused on design.

The MArch Architecture cultivates a collaborative and interdisciplinary learning environment, drawing on academic expertise and industry engagement to nurture reflective, responsible, and innovative emerging professionals. It blends conceptual thinking with technical resolution and business acumen. The course integrates industry as a core part of the course, with the opportunity to work alongside a versatile range of practitioners and expertise.

This course has been developed aligned to competences outlined by the statutory regulator for architecture in the UK and mapped to academic outcomes in key areas including:

The MArch Architecture offers an in‑depth exploration of advanced architectural practice, with modules that span diverse design, cultural and industry contexts, equipping students to deliver within the dynamic context of the built environment.

50% of this course is delivered through design projects, so will require portfolio submissions. Other assessment methods may include, reports, presentations, case studies, vivas, and essays.

Typically, a large proportion of the assessments on this course are practical (presentation, performance viva) and coursework-based assessments (portfolio, report, case study, essay, peer and self-assessment).

Entry requirements

UK students

Students are expected to possess one of the following to enrol on the MArch Architecture.

A lower second-class honours degree in architecture
Or an equivalent EU / international qualification
Or a professional qualification recognised as equivalent to an honours degree
And normally at least one year of relevant professional experience.

If you are applying directly from an undergraduate degree course without experience of professional practice, you must be able to demonstrate a strong portfolio of academic work and professional acumen, that can be mapped to professional body competences.

To be eligible for this course, you will need to be a competent speaker and writer of English. If you require a Student Visa you need to provide us with an IELTS or equivalent English language qualification, which demonstrates a minimum of 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each sub test) or CEFR Level B2 in each component.
