BA (Hons) Fashion Communication

The flexible design of this fashion marketing course will enable you to tailor your studies to your individual fashion media passions. You will explore creative areas including:

If you are studying the BA (Hons) Fashion Communication with Integrated Foundation Year version of this course, key topics of your integrated foundation year will include:

• Basics of fashion promotion, buying, and brand communications
• Conceptualisation and direction in fashion design
• Fashion illustration and life drawing techniques
• 3D draping and garment construction on the stand
• Techniques in fabric manipulation and digital printing
• Fashion styling and photography
• Brand identity management and creative leadership
• Prototyping, atelier practices, and digital tool usage
• Understanding industry trends and audience expectations

If you choose to add an Integrated Foundation Year on this course, you will be first introduced to the fundamental principles of fashion. Your foundation year gives you the time, space and support to explore your strengths, build confidence and prepare for the demands of project-based, industry-focused learning. Modules are as follows:

• Module 1: Diagnostic exploration - making informed choices
• Module 2: Technical - Technical knowledge in practice
• Module 3: Specialist - Innovating specialist practice
• Module 4: Integration - Integrated practice for progression to Higher Education

Please note: Students starting this course with the Integrated Foundation Year in September 2026/27 will study the 2027/28 approved modules in Years 1, 2 and 3.

Year 1

Build a strong foundation in fashion marketing and campaign creation, developing practical skills in photography, film, graphics, illustration and social media.

Modules may include:

• Employability Professionalism Collaboration
• Now: Trends, Communities and Behaviours

Year 2

Advance your multi-platform fashion media production, communication and campaign building skills, bridging academic study with real-world experience through an industry work-based learning opportunity.

Modules may include: 

• Artefact: Fashion in Print
• Lens: Fashion Narratives
• Screen: Fashion in Motion
• Career Catalyst
• Industry and Collaboration
• 360 Campaign
• Applied Industry Practice

Year 3

Deliver a comprehensive, self-directed Final Major Project and graduate with an industry-ready portfolio showcasing your professional practice and creative values.

Modules may include: 

• Fashion Future (Innovation Project)
• Employability/Professionalism, Collaborative - Creative Values: Fashion Ecosystems
• Sprint and Ideation
• Individual Project / Final Major Project

All modules are subject to revalidation.

Fashion Promotion and Communications includes a fully accredited work placement, giving students the opportunity to apply their learning in a professional environment. Recent placements include Urban Outfitters, Wonderland Magazine, Ralph Lauren, Ralph & Russo, Paul Smith, Karen Millen, Harvey Nichols, Fashion Scout, Exposure PR, AllSaints, Black Diamond Films, Duck Productions, Zandra Rhodes, 1801 London and Sane Communications.

Ravensbourne is ideally connected - North Greenwich station is just a 2-minute walk away from our campus and offers amazing views from the Greenwich Peninsula.

These transport links offer an easy route to some of London's major business hubs, perfect for reaching possible placements or networking events with employers in the worlds of business or technology.  

We accept a wide range of qualifications for entry onto our courses, whilst also considering the context in which they were achieved. For this course, we would usually require a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English in addition to any of the below;

• Two A Levels at grade CC or above
• BTEC Extended Diploma at grade MPP
• UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma
• T Level (pass or above)
• Access to Higher Education Diploma
• International Baccalaureate at grade 24 or above
• Other/Mixed qualifications equivalent to 64 UCAS Tariff points

Selection criteria:

Students should ideally have a background in art, creative media or design. Admission onto this course is also subject to a successful portfolio review. 

We may also consider a combination of portfolio and academic qualifications and take into consideration progress made during studies and/or relevant work experience.

If you wish to study our BA (Hons) Fashion Communication course, we will need to see examples of previous work that showcases your suitability for the course. 

Please provide the following for your portfolio review:

• The portfolio can be either digital or physical
• 12-15 portfolio pages, this may require you to edit your work
• Photography and film work films need to be in Quicktime files or uploaded onto Youtube or Vimeo so that the lecturer can view them on their laptop
• Work which demonstrates use of graphics and graphic layouts
• Theme-boards or trend boards which they can articulate, which showcase your thinking. We are keen to see how your research development has resulted in your finished pieces
• 1 or 2 good projects from conception to realisation
• A written piece of work, this can be on any subject but needs to be printed out, need to be able to also leave a copy

All the above has to be no more than 15 pages.

Overseas students

• All work must be made by the applicant
• 12 - 15 pages maximum
• Size A3 is ideal but we see work which is A2 , A1 or A0.
• Aim to show 3 projects which demonstrate design thinking - Research, ideas development, realisation / outcome
• Visual language / creative thinking:
• Drawings / illustrations
• Concept boards / Mood boards / Storyboards
• CAD skills ( Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, film editing software)
• Graphics - layouts and use of typography
• Photography
• Film
• Sketchbooks and scrapbooks
• Evidence of good written English
