Five of Ravensbourne BA (Hons) Advertising and Brand Design students have been working on a professional brief for the Thames Skills Academy, a training association supported by Transport for London and the Port of London Authority.

A campaign developed by third year students Khubrooh Hussain, Ryah Doherty, Lauren Jones, Nicholas Berreen and Harry Wilson was selected following a shortlisting process open to the entire year group. They then worked with the team at the Thames Skills Academy to refine their campaign, aimed at persuading skilled professionals to consider a career working on the Thames with companies like Thames Clipper and City Cruises.

The group were challenged to design posters and video assets to aid the recruitment drive, highlighting the wide variety of opportunities available, from engineering, to catering and hospitality.

Their campaign was unveiled on Tuesday 25 September at the ‘Careers on The Thames’ event, providing an opportunity to “see first hand the river of opportunities of highly skilled, well paid careers on the doorstep of young people in London”. The UK’s Maritime Minister, Nasrat Ghani MP, was also in attendance, delivering a speech on the importance of London’s river transport network.

Commenting, Khubrooh said: “Working with the Thames Skills Academy has been an eye-opening experience. I was unaware of the history of the Thames and working alongside them has given me a rich appreciation and all the hard work they do.”

Lauren added: “Working with the Thames Skills Academy was a brilliant opportunity! I worked alongside Nick, Khubrooh, Ryah and Harry. We followed the idea from being first briefed right through to the launch of the campaign and getting to see it printed at their careers event. Working with a real client was such an eye opening experience. It was challenging but worthwhile to see the project through from pitch to execution and will definitely help my portfolio stand out when it comes to getting a job in the industry!”
