Ravensbourne and Greenpeace launch Arctic campaign
Postgraduate students from Ravensbourne, London’s cutting-edge digital media and design university, provided content to a new show that launched Greenpeace’s Save the Arctic campaign to the public on Saturday 20 April.
Students from MA Animation Futures, MA/MSc Broadcast Futures, and MA/MSc Interactive Digital Media provided animations and visual content to the large-scale building video projection installation. The show used building projection mapping, a technique that employs visual illusions to play with the architecture of a building.
International student Daero Ra from S.Korea was involved in the project, he said, “ What I valued most was participating in a social and environmental campaign. It is meaningful work – providing people with an opportunity to think and change their mind. Also, it was also a good opportunity to broaden my own perspective and get work experience under a major organization”.
A team of Ravensbourne undergraduate students were also tasked with filming each step of the campaign, including the public launch event on Saturday. As part of the shoot, the team visited Greenpeace headquarters in Amsterdam and interviewed key members within the organisation. The official final film is showcased on Greenpeace’s website where it will no doubt secure millions of hits worldwide.
In the last 30 years, the world has seen a loss of over half of surface sea ice, and over two thirds of the sea ice volume at the top of the world. For over 800,000 years, ice has been a permanent feature of the Arctic Ocean, however, due to the use of fossil fuels it is now melting at an unprecedented rate. With Ravensbourne’s help, the Save the Arctic campaign aims to put into place the changes needed to stop the rapid devastation of such an important natural habitat.
The Save the Arctic video projection installation was launched in central London on Saturday 20 April at 8.30pm.
