Sam Wood BA, MA

Biography

Sam is a London-based artist working across 3D Animation, Illustration, and Design. Their work blends surreal storytelling with bold, playful visuals—drawing inspiration from children’s TV, 80s horror movies, and DIY culture. Their work has been commissioned by clients including The New York Times, Pull & Bear, and Bloomberg Businessweek.

Sam’s background spans Illustration, Animation, and Design, with a strong emphasis on narrative and accessible methods of production. They completed a BA in Illustration at the University of Brighton in 2020 and an MA in Animation at the Royal College of Art in 2023. Rooted in DIY culture and visual storytelling, their work often explores surreal and atmospheric worlds through expressive, character-led animation. Their short film Dead Air was featured on Creative Boom, and their practice has also been profiled by It’s Nice That.

Sam is currently developing Data Garden—a narrative-driven game about sound, plants, and memory. They primarily work in Blender, After Effects, and Unity, building distinctive visual experiences with a strong sense of mood and tone.

They lecture in Design and Animation at Ravensbourne University and have previously taught at Brighton University. Their teaching and workshops focus on experimental storytelling, sequential image-making, and creative research—often drawing from DIY publishing, zine-making, and intuitive drawing as tools for unlocking ideas.
