Built for Industry case study: Nikol Dehaan

The critical importance of providing wider access to quality education is perhaps demonstrated most effectively through Nikol’s story. Having been deported to the United Kingdom in 2017, whereupon she became homeless, Nikol’s engagement with Ravensbourne began through a partnership with homelessness charity Accumulate. She has since completed an Access to Higher Education qualification at the University, followed by BA (Hons) and MA/MFA degrees in Digital Photography.
“My time at Ravensbourne equipped me with both the technical skills and creative confidence needed to navigate the fast-paced demands of the creative industries. Collaborating on real-world projects taught me how to adapt quickly, communicate ideas clearly and work across disciplines, which are essential skills I now use daily in my professional practice.”

Recognising the fast-evolving world of work, and the growing importance of strong communication skills, Nikol explains that: “Creatives now need to blend traditional skills with tech savviness, but just as important are soft skills like resilience, networking and understanding the business side.”
Reflecting on what might have made her journey easier, Nikol believes that “access to paid internships” and “mentorship from industry professionals who shared similar lived experiences” would have been instrumental.

Representation matters and seeing people like me succeed would’ve helped me feel more confident and less isolated early on.”
“Universities should act as bridges between talent and opportunity. They must prioritise inclusivity by supporting underrepresented students with financial aid, career guidance and spaces that reflect diverse voices.”
