Visual Artists and Virtual Production - Potentialities, Challenges and Novel Approaches
Currently reading: Overview
Overview
Virtual Production (VP) techniques are changing areas of film and TV production, but how might an artist from outside these industries and these modes of production engage with the relevant tools and processes? What new ideas and ways of working might they bring to the VP process and how might they differ from those within a more conventional production?
Project description
Case Study: An Experimental Artist Approach
In this practice-based case study, an artist used to smaller-scale, solo working brought an experimental approach to making. Their focus was on a conceptual interest in the techniques themselves, rather than on achieving pre-visualised shots and looks.
Collaborative Use of VP Techniques
We facilitated the creation of an experimental work using specific VP techniques and Unreal Engine. This was carried out in collaboration with an Unreal Engine specialist to prepare material for running an LED volume in a studio on a shooting day.
Insights and Impact on Training
Through the artist’s successes—and more importantly the challenges arising—we investigate approaches and considerations affecting engagement with VP. These findings inform the development of skills training and education curricula.
Aims and outcomes
The project looks at the artist’s successes, and more importantly the challenges they faced, to explore what influences engagement with virtual production. These insights will help shape skills training and education courses.
A video documenting the findings will be produced and shared at conferences and other events in 2025.
