Planning, Writing and Defending Doctoral Thesis: Strategies and Recommendations
Project Summary
This paper presents a systematic framework for successfully completing and defending a doctoral thesis. Despite the growing number of candidates enrolling in doctoral programmes such as Education (EdD), Business Administration (DBA), Engineering (EngD), Public Administration (DPh), Professional Studies (DProf/DPS), Public Health (DrPH), and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD);there remains a pressing need to provide candidates with a clear understanding of the strategies required to produce and defend a high-quality doctoral thesis. Achieving this goal requires careful planning, rigorous preparation, and the ability to communicate research findings with clarity, precision, and academic integrity.
Aims and Outcomes
The primary aim of this project is to outline strategic approaches for preparing, developing, and defending a doctoral thesis. This includes maintaining a coherent and systematic structure, organising the research logically, and ensuring that the thesis makes a meaningful and original contribution to knowledge and practice within the field. The work should demonstrate both intellectual originality and a deep, critical understanding of the chosen research topic.
The research project focuses on six key areas:
- Selecting a research problem
- Conducting a comprehensive literature review
- Designing an appropriate research methodology
- Presenting and analysing results
- Engaging in critical discussion
- Preparing for and defending the thesis
The paper further emphasises the importance of approaching the viva voce examination with confidence, professionalism, and composure. Even when faced with challenging or critical questions, candidates should maintain a respectful and reflective demeanour, demonstrating mastery of their research and readiness to engage in scholarly dialogue.
