The Learning Lab
Advancing innovative, inclusive, and evidence-based education through research and innovation in pedagogy, learning design, and educational technology.
Overview
Purpose
The Lab recognises that global educational systems face substantial challenges: persistent attainment gaps disadvantaging students from underrepresented backgrounds, insufficient support for neurodiverse learners, underutilised potential of artificial intelligence in personalised learning support, and limited evidence-based guidance for educators navigating rapid technological change. The Learning Lab addresses these challenges through rigorous research translating findings into practical guidance for educators.
Current research projects span evidence-based learning approaches for neurodiverse students, AI-assisted academic support exploring how technology can close attainment gaps, and evidence-based approaches to student belonging and mattering. Each project combines rigorous research methodology with extensive international comparative work, ensuring findings have relevance beyond UK contexts.
The Lab's strategic development through 2028 centres on creating an evidence-based pedagogy framework that will be adopted by partner institutions across multiple continents, generating measurable international impact. Simultaneously, the Lab develops an industry-informed curriculum design toolkit with global applicability, working with edtech companies and international education agencies to ensure toolkit relevance for diverse contexts. An international teacher training programme incorporating multinational industry input showcases how collaborative research generates practical professional development for educators worldwide.
These combined research efforts are designed to generate policy citations in international education frameworks and global teaching standards, positioning research evidence where it influences educator practice at scale. By 2028, the Learning Lab aims to demonstrate that Ravensbourne research shapes how educators approach learning design, inclusive pedagogy, and technology integration worldwide.
