Tomorrow's World (1980)

Concept and creative process

‘Tomorrow’s World’ was a topical studio-based science series exploring present and future technologies. This 'brain planet' concept, intercut with abstract flashes of technology, conveyed a strong sense of science fantasy/fact in the juxtaposition of its images.
The brain planet physical model was filmed at Oxford Scientific Films using one of the latest motion control rigs under manual control. This large 'Galactorscope' rig with various axes of movement utilised a fibre-optic snorkel lens attachment. This enabled the camera to travel down the model’s valleys smoothly in slow motion. This footage was then intercut with the researched technological live action.
