Out of the Doll's House (1988)

Concept and creative process

‘Out of the Doll’s House’ was a series of eight films examining the way women's lives had changed in the 20th Century. The idea for the title sequence was to reflect this changing role. A live action shoot against blue screen was filmed using a single woman performer, who had successfully auditioned for the part. Various costumes were chosen and hair styles agreed with the costume designer and make-up artist. In post-production the live action colour grade was enhanced to look more stylised. Frames were cut out to make it look more like a series of drawings and hand drawn elements were added over the images. The background was added at this stage, the styling of which reflected antique woodblock illustration. The mixture of a modern look juxtaposed with an ancient look epitomised the nature of the documentaries. The end sequence brought the viewer back to reality. The model of the house was constructed by modelmakers Artem.
