Omnibus (1981)

Concept and creative process

This stylish title sequence for the Music & Arts flagship ‘Omnibus’ strand has the look of a 3D computer animation. However Darrell Pockett created it by means of a carefully lit and choreographed stop frame motion control shoot on a large, lit model of a building. Set in a night time cityscape, with the ‘Omnibus’ logo incorporated on its roof, the building provided a dramatic screen for 'projected' live action footage of the Arts. The Arts footage, is seen distorted, as if through reeded glass, in the windows of the building. The footage was created as an edited effects roll and composited with the moving background shots of the building in post-production. Dramatic, simple and entertaining, the use of models in this way to achieve a 3D look was often the solution of choice for designers at a time when computer animation was too costly and too slow in rendering time.
