North and South (1975)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for an adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's feisty and passionate story, set across the social divide in the changing world of Victorian industrial society. Bernard Lodge's titles encapsulated the two poles of the divide in two illustrations, linked together in the title shot by a portrait of Rosalind Shanks as Margaret Hale. A simple, elegant and appropriate opening title sequence for the drama series it prefaces.
