The Man Who Was Hunting Himself (1972)

Concept and creative process

The inspiration for creative ideas can often be under your very nose, as Bernard Lodge proved with 'The Man Who Was Hunting Himself', a stylish, live action sequence for this drama thriller, full of suspense, menace and intrigue. Photographic still portraits of the lead actor Donald Burton were used as the basic material for the live action shoot and were subjected to close examination through the use of grids, set squares, protractors and the parallel motion system of the drawing board, on which the action takes place. The investigator remains unseen, apart from his hands operating the equipment or menacingly drawing a line through the eye of the subject. Beautifully edited, this pacy sequence demonstrated the power of graphically framed live action to intrigue and impress.
