The Lowdown (1988)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a children's documentary series in which children shared their own real-life stories. Designed and animated by Roger Ferrin and filmed on a rostrum camera by Bert Walker at Zephyr Films, this simply articulated 2D model was used to create an intriguing and colourful opening title which related well to the target audience. The flat elements of the model were animated single frame on a rostrum camera to timings taken from a frame count of the music. This determined the sync points which were used to work out the detailed choreography of the sequence. The blue spotlight and the laser beams were created from back-lit artwork and coloured gels, with a diffusion filter on the camera to create the laser beam effect. These were animated by camera moves, in the case of the spotlight, while the lasers were created by uncovering and masking back-lit clear lines on black cinemoids with coloured gels and superimposing them during a second pass of the exposed negative through the camera at the planned sync points.
