The Learning Machine (1985)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘The Learning Machine’, a series examining the use and abuse of computers in schools and how they are changing the education world. The title sequence combined rostrum camera filming of still photographs of children and their families with further stills superimposed by images of the keyboard. In addition, some shots involving a hand drawing a line and pressing the keys on a calculator were filmed with the camera running at speed. The titles, using back lit artwork, were filmed separately and double exposed over the calculator screen and over the keyboard at the end of the sequence. The visual juxtaposition of the paper, pencil and ruler with the electronic calculator illustrated the fundamental shift in technology over time, the use and abuse of which was questioned in the programmes.
