Inside Medicine (1975)

Concept and creative process

The title sequence for ‘Inside Medicine’, a weekly topical series that examined the latest issues from the world of hospitals, doctors, diseases, cures, and patients. The sequence began with the sound of a single heartbeat which became the driver for both the visuals and the music throughout the simple animated sequence. The first single heartbeat and its visual were joined by other animating lines in different colours as the music kicked in and the visuals explored the graphic possibilities of combined trace lines on a medical screen. A pull out from inside the ‘C’ of the programme logo framed the trace patterns which faded to black as the logo reached centre screen. The original heartbeat trace returned to dissect the logo and leave its spike neatly above the ‘N’ of ‘MEDICINE’. Simple but very effective and visually satisfying.
