The Hot Shoe Show (1984)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a musical entertainment covering different types of dance styles, linked with comedy sketches. The sequence was based on specially shot live action footage of several dancers performing energetic balletic leaps, back-flips and somersaults in a studio. The resulting edited footage was cut to the rhythm of the drum solo and treated electronically with a solarising effect, thereby increasing the contrast and reducing the tonal range of the image. The initial fast cuts of held poses of the dancers, were followed by brief sections of motion which were successively step-printed to create a fan of after-images, thereby enhancing the sense of direction and movement.
