Dream Wheels (1999)

Concept and creative process

‘Dream Wheels’ was a summer spin-off from ‘Tomorrow’s World’, hosted by Philippa Forrester and Mike Smith. It was still rooted in science but was a more consumer-based show with the look to the future of transport. The concept for the titles was born out the idea of motion, specifically the motion you see and feel travelling in a car or travelling along an airport runway. For the design of the moving background we used travel symbols and icons of cars and planes with the motion of wheels composited as an extra layer. We wanted to create that rushing motion and the use of acceleration where possible. We also designed the circular footage window to be used as a visual motif of a wheel. We designed the icons & line artwork in Illustrator then laid them out into design frames in Photoshop which were then used as a template for animation. We used After Effects to build motion into the background using the Photoshop assets. We then made a small base edit of the footage that sits in the circular window and once we had the final music, we were able to tweak it to make sure that everything lined up.
