Blizzard's Wonderful Wooden Toys (1984)

Concept and creative process

A series of six programmes in which Richard Blizzard made a whole range of toys and models. The treatment used in this idea was years before 3D computer animation was readily available, so everything had to be hand drawn. The idea of creating a wire frame prototype of each model, which turns into the full colour version as it revolves, was daunting. Each model was photographed frame by frame on a turntable as it revolved using a stills camera. The photographs were printed onto photographic paper and then pegged in registration to be shot on a 35mm rostrum camera. These pegged prints were handed over to an artworker, who pegged clear cells over the top and did hand drawn outline images in registration with the photographed toys. The title logo was created in the same way. It was impossible to produce a perfect rendition, but this sequence was innovative at that time.
