Ad Lib (1971)

Concept and creative process

The brief to design opening titles for a weekly series of live conversations on the issues of the week with the intriguing Latin title ‘Ad Lib’, inspired designer Alan Jeapes to explore the dictionary definitions of the phrase ‘ad lib’ as a way of introducing the programme. A simple rostrum camera shoot with one piece of artwork was all that was required, with a back-lit Kodalith of the definitions being revealed frame by frame rhythmically to the music. Colour was added by the use of gels and the crash zoom in on the phrase ‘ad lib’ as a finale punctuated the end of the sequence. Simple, no frills, low budget design, but extremely effective and memorable.
