Ravensbourne’s BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Brand Management course offered me the freedom to choose what I wanted to do. The majority of other courses I had looked at were solely dedicated to buying and didn’t look at any other areas of fashion. As well as this, knowing that the course tutors would help us develop on a more one to one basis compared to other universities was very appealing. The building itself was also a major part in convincing me to study there — the openness of the rooms and the integration between courses was something I hadn’t seen at any other university.
Ravensbourne helped me grow as a person and increase my confidence tremendously. I grew up from a shy and nervous teenager to a confident young adult who has just launched their own business. Ravensbourne gave me the confidence to push myself, manage teams and learn new skills. It gave me access to some incredible opportunities that I might not have had at another university, including a second-year trip to Sri Lanka where I gained significant knowledge about manufacturing and fabrics.
Another major highlight was being nominated for awards at Graduate Fashion Week and showing at The Ravensbourne Degree Show. Being recognised by some of the biggest names in fashion as part of Graduate Fashion Week was incredible. It was the first year BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Brand Management students at Ravensbourne took part, which was a highlight in itself. It was great to know that we were doing our tutors proud and creating work other students would look up to.
The course was a catalyst for me developing my own sustainable childrenswear brand, Project Panda, which I have just secured funding to launch. It will be an educational clothing line, aimed at educating children and parents on animals and the environment around them. Winning a place in Ravensbourne’s Incubation unit, which aims to nurture start-up businesses, through the Students’ Union’s Incubation Lite Award was incredibly helpful. It helped me secure funding and get the ball rolling. My amazing BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Brand Management tutors also pushed me and helped me develop my ideas and confidence.
Since graduating, I have also been working as a freelance creative director at the fashion label John Zack. My day to day activities include photographing models, developing the company’s website, editing photographs and looking at new styles and designs. Additionally, I work as a freelance graphic designer, creating brand development packs for different companies.
I would encourage current students to trust in your ideas and take a chance on yourself. Work as hard as you can and don’t cut any corners. Every piece of work you do will relate to a world challenge you will one day have to deal with in your career.
