A major part of Derek’s career in higher education has involved investigating innovative ways for educators and contemporary practitioners to work together. While working at the University of the Arts London he instigated and chaired ‘Alt/Shift’ a research platform designed to facilitate ‘meaningful dialogue and constructive collaboration between the creative professions and design education. Since then, he has instigated projects with internationally recognised organisations such as The O2, National Air Traffic Control, Deloitte and De La Rue, respected journals such as Eye Magazine and groundbreaking digital design studios like Moving Brands, Sennep and ustwo.
He is the author of ‘Communication Design, Insights from the Creative Industries’, an overview of emerging creative practice, published by Bloomsbury. The book has received global distribution and has been translated into Spanish by Barcelona-based publisher, Promopress Editions. According to Eye Magazine ‘Communication Design’ “explores design and art direction in a practical way that bridges the gap between in-class work and the professional world and US design innovation specialists, Zeus Jones, described it as “the definitive guide to modern branding.”
At the graduation ceremonies for the University of the Arts, London, in 2012 & 2013, Derek was presented University Teaching Awards, for ‘excellence in supporting employability and innovation in the development of work-based learning’.
He has also published a paper about ‘Collaborative curriculum development’ in AD the Journal of the National Society of Education in Art & Design and in 2016 & 2017, he was a keynote speaker at the annual conference of the Graphic Design Educators Network.
