Next Gen Careers research ignites in-depth discussion on how national careers guidance can improve
Research released in August by Ravensbourne University London identified a stark over-reliance on informal sources of careers information, advice and guidance (CIAG), with young people across the country preferring to hear from family members, social media, influencers and video platforms such as YouTube.
These findings were unpacked in an enlightening and thought-provoking webinar, Next Gen Careers: Collaborating for better careers advice, which is now available to watch as the fourth episode of our podcast Ravensbourne on Record.
Streamed live in September, a first for the University, the podcast features a detailed discussion from a panel which once again brought together educators, industry, policymakers and the young people that we are striving to help.
Deputy Director of Skills England, Nick Mawhinney; UK Head of Post Production at Hogarth, Timothy Last; and Ravensbourne student currently on placement at IKEA, Ruby Bennett joined our Vice Chancellor, Jon Kingsbury, to discuss the perceived issues with traditional CIAG as well as how to address them.
Jon quote
This event follows our recent research report that uncovered something that must be addressed if we’re going to unlock the labour market for all; to get the best from talent and young people in the UK, and to meet our growth ambitions set out in the Industrial Strategy. ”
The panel’s insights not only made for captivating discussion, but should also serve as the bedrock of a continual dialogue between the UK economy’s key stakeholders. As set out in the University’s 2030 framework, as well as the Government’s Modern Industrial Strategy, only by carefully aligning education with the needs of industry can we ensure that young people are adequately equipped to fulfil their potential and supercharge the country’s productivity in the coming years.
The fractured careers advice system was just one of the findings from Next Gen Careers: Aspirations and access. We will be delving into a variety of the key insights uncovered by our research on a regular basis throughout the next year. Keep an eye out on the Ravensbourne website and our social channels for the very latest news, views and events aimed at further demystifying how best to prepare students for the labour market of tomorrow.
