Ravensbourne University London lecturer designs set for Mitchell and Webb’s big TV comeback
Ravensbourne University London’s Digital Film Production Lecturer, Sarah Mursal, recently served as a Production Designer on the highly anticipated return of comedy duo David Mitchell and Robert Webb in their new Channel 4 sketch show, ‘Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping.’
The long-awaited comeback marks four years since 'Back' left UK screens, with the new series blending comedy, fresh talent and topical parodies.
Sarah quote
Working on a high-profile show like Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping was brilliant – every set, every scene is a chance to push creative boundaries. It’s hugely rewarding to see ideas come to life on screen, and even more exciting knowing our students get to witness and contribute to this process. Giving them hands-on exposure to real industry environments is invaluable, and it’s moments like these that inspire the next generation of production designers.”
The series tackles historical moments, news and awkward social situations with a self-aware approach, poking fun at life's problems without trying to solve them.
Behind the scenes, the scope of the project was huge. In just five weeks, the team created around 85 unique sets, from futuristic death rays to a parody of a low-budget Australian TV drama, with the process made smoother by integrating LED screen technology.
The project not only showcased Ravensbourne’s expertise in creative production design but also generated opportunities for students, who were able to visit the set and gain valuable hands-on work experience, alongside working in the prop store.
'Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping' is now streaming on Channel 4, offering audiences both classic sketches and a new wave of comedy. This project demonstrates how Ravensbourne’s staff and students continue to make an impact on high-profile productions in the UK’s creative sector.
At Ravensbourne University London, our students benefit from unique access to real world experiences, insights and opportunities that equip them for success in their chosen industries.
