Honouring Pride month

Pride month is dedicated to honouring the LGBTQI+ communities all around the world and to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York, June 1969.

It's about people coming together in solidarity, celebration and protest to show how far gay rights have come, and to acknowledge that there is still a long way to go.

At Ravensbourne, we relish it as a time to celebrate our own wonderful LGBTQI+ community and to spread the message of love out across the university and as far as it can travel.

Why Pride month is important...

Pride month is a global celebration of LGBTQI+ culture and progress. It is also a powerful and necessary opportunity to protest and raise awareness of the issues facing the LGBTQI+ communities both at home in the UK and globally.

It acknowledges the courageous acts of devotion and sacrifice that people have made and serves as an important reminder that people around the world continue to be persecuted because of their sexuality.

As well as a time of festivity at Ravensbourne, Pride month is an opportunity for the LGBTQI+ community and its allies to continue to raise awareness of inequalities and to campaign for equal rights and freedom for all.

50th anniversary of first UK Pride event

This year is especially significant, as 2022 marks 50 years since the first Pride event in the UK. The first Pride rally took place on July 1, 1972, (as this was the nearest Saturday to the anniversary of the Stonewall riots of June 28, 1969).

The Pride parade in London will take place on July 2 this year.
