Sahara With Michael Palin (2002)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a series in which Michael Palin explored nine fascinating countries and their cultures during a trek across the Sahara Desert. In a witty 3D CGI animation, intercut with shots of Michael Palin walking in the desert landscape, a bug charted an erratic course through the soft surface sand, spelling out the word ‘Sahara’ as it went. Its progress was interrupted by a passing human foot wearing a desert boot, which left its imprint in the sand. The bug popped back up out of the sand and completed the word in the space the footprint had left between heel and sole. The remainder of the title was completed in 3D animation, casting a drop shadow on the background as the bug scuttled off unharmed on its way.
