On The Record (1990)

Concept and creative process

‘On the Record’ was a weekly BBC political television show presented by Jonathan Dimbleby which was launched in the autumn of 1988.  For the opening titles of the show, inspired by Pugin’s neo-gothic designs for the Houses of Parliament, designer Tim Goodchild conceived the remarkable idea a ‘political animal’, stalking the British Isles.  His concept was brought to life and filmed stop-motion at 3 Peach Animation’s studio in Southwark, London and consisted of a one meter long model crocodile with an armature inside, constructed out of car body, glue and leather. The reptilian puppet is presently stored in BBC Broadcasting House in a glass case. The music is by George Fenton, who successfully created a number of other BBC News & Current Affairs themes.

Produced by 3 Peach Animation, animated by Joan Ashworth and Andrew Staveley.
