The Real McCoy (1991)

Concept and creative process

The opening sequence for a comedy sketch show featured a team of performers from the black and Asian comedy scene. The dancers were wearing lightweight model monitors made by Artem over their heads and were shot in a green screen studio at Damson Studios. The colourful, abstract animation representing their faces was created by Chris Tucker. This was matched to the movement of the live action dancers and keyed over the monitors on their heads in a digital edit on Quantel Henry by Malcolm Dalton at the BBC. The abstract free-form animation was also used as a foreground layer over the action as a percentage overlay. Produced by Charlie Hanson, the title sequence for ‘The Real McCoy’ was designed and directed by John Salisbury.
