Out Of The Blue (1996)

Concept and creative process

‘Out of The Blue’ was a gritty crime drama set in Sheffield, broadcast on BBC One between 23 May 1995, and 9 September 1996. The programme was shot entirely on film to emphasis the urban reality and often used strong themes in the story lines. The titles were designed to reflect this with a grainy and cool colour grade. Cameraman Pete Lane shot sequences across the city on a basic digital handheld video camera. Iconic areas of the city and transport system were used alongside the haunting image of a child's face. The whole sequence was designed by Tom Brooks to be raw and real.
