The New Rhythm of Music (1970)

Concept and creative process

The designer adopted a stark, monochrome, typographic solution to the requirement for an opening title to this exploration by Perre Boulez of the music of Bartok and Stravinsky and their place in 20th century music. The jagged de-construction and re-constitution of the words on the screen in counterpoint to the music created a fitting sequence. It was filmed under a rostrum camera with back-lit artwork and animated mattes revealing and concealing the titles.
