Moving Pictures (1990)

Concept and creative process

Designer Iain Greenway worked closely with the show’s producer Michael Jackson on the selection of movie clips and images that were featured in the title sequence for ‘Moving Pictures’. He then edited them together as a sequence and gave it to Damian Gascoigne to rotoscope, which involved projecting and tracing the original film frame by frame. From the tracings the illustrator then re-created each of the still frames as water colour paintings, which when filmed on a rostrum camera, created the animated sequence. The colours were corrected in post-production on a Quantel Henry at Cell Animation.
