Merry-Go-Round (1977)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for ‘Merry-Go-Round’, a Schools programme for 7-9 year olds on the subject of multiplication. The titles themselves were based on the idea of a fruit machine in an amusement arcade, with the wheels spinning until they produced the correct combination of letters and words to spell out the programme title. It was followed by an introduction to the number 5, which was the focus of this particular programme, demonstrating how the number can be found everywhere. The animation was created in the traditional manner, by drawing on animation paper and tracing the drawings on to cels, which were then painted and filmed on a rostrum camera.
