Holiday (2001)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a travel magazine featuring up-to-the-minute reports on the hottest, most happening destinations around the globe. Apart from making a choice from the many production shots for the holiday montage for this opening title and assembling them in a digital edit, the other task facing the designer was to create a logo for the series that would resolve satisfactorily from the montage of seductive production holiday footage that preceded it. The basic shot of the head of a sunflower was taken into a digital edit, becoming the ‘O’ of the programme’s title in a burst of intense sunlight. It was enlarged yet further and the outer flower petals were animated in rings in opposite directions to each other, creating movement. A cascade of larger and smaller sunflowers was animated to well up out of the centre of the sunflower and drifted off in all directions. This sunflower layer was also used in the holiday footage, superimposed over all of the carnival action scenes that populated the montage throughout, which gave the whole sequence a pleasing design symmetry.
