Growing Up Wild (1993)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for ‘Growing Up Wild’, a series which each week featured the young of a different family of animals. The programme was presented by Terry Nutkins and was shown on CBBC and on BBC1 during the same week. Designers Ian Hewitt and Jane Walker devised a scenario for the opening titles, based on the brief for the show, and commissioned an animation sequence that was both visually arresting and appealing to children. A specially designed soundtrack was commissioned from the designers’ storyboard for the animators to work to within the standard 25 second duration. The result was a very free, painterly animation in which the animals morphed smoothly from one to another, with some, like the elephant and frog, even growing up in the process. The programme title was hand painted from typesetting and added in post-production, triggered by the tiger’s growl.
