Friday Night With Wogan (1992)

Concept and creative process

This opening title sequence to introduce the early evening talk show ‘Friday Night With Wogan’ was created with early computer-generated animation. Each of the fragmented elements are frames featuring talking guests. Although it appears normal now to our eyes, this was one of the first computer animation sequences to utilize motion blur software to simulate the more real way that motion is captured by film. As a result, the render time per frame was very long which led to a last-minute dash to Television Centre to deliver the final sequence, minutes before it went to Live Transmission.
The sequence comprised a continuous panning movement of the words ‘FRIDAY NIGHT’, set in condensed sans serif caps, bordered by chequerboard graphic elements, reflected in the design for the set, which was visible through the letters of the logo.
