Fathers And Families (1977)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a series of plays on the role of the father in the family, linked by the character of John Malory, played by Dinsdale Landen, solicitor to all the characters. For the opening sequence, a wide shot composite of six family groups is revealed at the bottom of the screen. Each family is the subject of one of the plays, directed by Christopher Morahan. At the end of the opening credits, the camera zoomed in each time to a close-up of a different family unit. The individual families were photographed in the studio and a large print was made from the individual negatives, which were airbrushed to make them appear to be sitting or standing in a long line. The print was filmed on a computer-controlled camera.
