The Fast Show (1996)

Concept and creative process

The titles for ‘The Fast Show’, a series of quickfire, character-based comedy shows, starring Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson, amongst others. The opening sequence was created in a digital edit on a Quantel Henry and featured a montage of continuous cross-dissolved zooms on footage of the show’s protagonists. The crash-zoom sequence increased in speed exponentially until almost subliminal, overlaid by a screen-filling shot of the words ‘FAST SHOW’ set in outline capitals, which panned from right to left across the screen. The zoom sequence ended abruptly with an explosion on the soundtrack and a cut to the programme logo on a plain black background, zooming up to centre frame, surrounded by a haze of green, in a moment of calm after the visual mayhem.
