Face To Face (1960)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a series of interviews from the late 1950s and early 1960s, in which John Freeman cross-examined leading personalities of the day. The titles for the programmes were in each case a series of drawings commissioned from Feliks Topolski of the interviewee, in this instance Evelyn Waugh and John Freeman. The drawings from the artist’s sketchbook, were pre-filmed on a rostrum camera panning from one to the next. The film was played into the live studio from Telecine, with the final drawing aligned to the live picture for a smooth transition.
