Entertainment USA - New York (1983)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for ‘Entertainment USA’ which was a weekly look at entertainment news, clips, interviews and music from the United States, presented by Jonathan King from a different US city in each show. It was a bit of a travelogue which ran for 8 years from 1983 and was nominated for a BAFTA Award in 1987. The titles needed to reflect entertainment and all with an American flavour. Jonathan King created the series title track (‘I’ll Slap Your Face’) which was my starting point. A neon sign was the style for the show’s logo. The graphics were all artworked and animated by Chris Tucker. They were shot on a rostrum camera using front and back-lit artwork. The sequences were combined in the edit with live action clips of US street scenes, culminating in a neon map and name of the city that the show was coming from that week.
