Embroidery (1980)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a series about modern embroidery, presented by Jan Beaney. Individual strips of embroidery samples were placed under the rostrum camera and filmed to create a background for the animated programme logo. This was superimposed in two stages by back-lighting separate clear-on-black Kodaliths of the ‘embroidery’ logo and the needle. The animation was created by filming in reverse the painting out of the ‘embroidery’ logo, so that on projection it would appear to write itself on. On a separate pass, the needle dissolved in to coincide with the end of the animation.
