Concept and creative process
'Coal' was a documentary series looking at the demise of the mining industry. I shot live action footage and graded it heavily to give it a gritty high contrast look which reflected the dramatic and hard hitting story. I used a skip full of helmets as a visual metaphor for the collapse of mining. I visited the mine and filmed on site - the miners coming up from the pit, the pit head and a skip full of helmets at the end of the shift. The edit was straight forward and finally the footage was colour graded.
